ancerey Yevgeny Alexandrovich
(St. Petersburg 1848 - St. Petersburg 1886)
Yevgeny Alexandrovich Lancerey was a Russian sculptor, born in 1848 and died in 1886 in St. Petersburg. He was a major Russian sculptor whose work centered upon horses and their relationship with man. He produced a wide range of works during his comparatively short career. Some of his more ambitious works were composed of groups of five or seven horses, or racing troikas. All his works were executed with fine attention to the details of faces and clothing. Lancerey was married to Ekaterina Nikolayevna "Katherine" Benois, sister of artist Alexandre Nikolayevich Benois. They were parents to Yevgeny Yevgenievich Lancerey, also spelled Lansere (1875–1946), who became a Russian graphic artist (painter, sculptor, mosaicist, and illustrator).
The work of Lancerey is represented in the following collections: The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, amongst others.
