Biography
Lev Feliksovich Lagorio studied at the Imperial Academy at Saint Petersburg under the celebrated M. N. Vorobiov and B.P. Villeval'de. Lagorio was a painter, water-colourist, and master of seascapes. His work was influenced by the artist Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky. Like Aivazovsky, Lagorio sailed with the Russian fleet and made maritime sketches of the seacoasts. In 1845 Lagorio went to a sea voyage on the Groziashchy frigate to study the arrangement of warship. He traveled along the Baltic Sea coast to paint etudes, and was sent to Vyborg and to Caucasus with the same purpose. For View on the Marsh on the Lisy Nos Cape picture he was awarded with the Great Gold Medal and the subsidized trip abroad. He visited Paris and Rome, painted in Tivoli, Olevano, Sorrento.
Lagorio travelled to Italy and spent eight years there; the work he did there brought him much acclaim back in Russia, ultimately being rewarded with a professorship at the Academy. Lagorio painted large canvases on the basis of studies made during numerous trips to Caucasus, Black Sea and Caspian coasts. He continued his work by painting the coasts of Finland and Norway and was in demand by the Romanovs to document the wartime years, often being sent to the front to complete pictures glorifying the Russian successes.
