Landscape by a Riverside Town, said to be Treviso
Biography
Philippe de Momper was the son of Joos de Momper II (1564–1635), one of the outstanding Flemish landscape painters of his generation. Philippe was also a landscape painter and was born and died in Antwerp, becoming a member of that city’s Guild of St. Luke in 1624. Prior to this he had spent two years in Italy, travelling with Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678), where, according to Arnold Houbraken he had been an early member of the Schildersbent in Rome. In addition to his own independent works, Philippe also contributed staffage to some of his father’s landscapes.
